My name is Ivan Belousov. I am a media artist working with programming, 3D modeling, sound design, and the creation of interactive art objects—combining industrial manufacturing with handcrafted methods. In my artistic practice, I explore emotional interactions between humans, nature and technology.
I remember one day as a child I saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. My father was a captain. I remember how the salty wind blew on my face and the waves threw my nine-year-old body in different directions. I remember how I froze when I looked into the eyes of wild nature and saw its soul. At that moment I realized how dangerous and beautiful it is. This experience inspires me to combine in my practice the aesthetics of the natural and the technological, of organic and artificial life.
I am particularly interested in popularizing scientific and technological knowledge from specialized fields, and in examining how emerging technologies become integrated into everyday life. My cross-disciplinary background supports this approach.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, where I gained a solid foundation in scientific and engineering methods, data analysis, and programming in Python, C++, and C#. Alongside my academic background, I have studied music since early childhood, including instrumental performance, composition, electronic music, sound design, and sound engineering. To bring together these two fields, I pursued a Master’s degree in Art & Science, where I became deeply interested in creating interactive artworks that combine both digital and physical components. My ability to craft physical objects is supported by my country upbringing, where I developed hands-on experience working with various materials. During university breaks, I worked as a seaman on a sailing schooner, traveling across Europe, through the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. This experience inspired me to earn an international commercial skipper’s license, and I have now been working as a boat captain for four years. My cross-disciplinary background provides me with hard skills and allows me to build connections across diverse fields — something that continues to enrich and support my artistic practice.
In the “non zero sum game” project, I used my programming skills to develop a reinforcement learning environment for AI. My engineering experience helped me design electronics and develop drawings and models for industrial metalworking, and my experience in biophysics helped me model a symbiotic system. A lot of manual metalworking has been done in this project: drilling, cutting, soldering, assembling and locksmithing. To develop an interactive sound design, I used my experience in working with music. As a result, the art object is a great interface, both simple and interesting to explore, and most importantly, very valuable to me because I did everything myself. You can find more information about its concept in the portfolio. During my Art & Science Master’s studies, I focused on game engines, interactive sound design, and working with microcontrollers. My projects are always interactive and invite audience participation.
